The primary role of the Mechanical Design Manager is to lead and manage the mechanical design team responsible for creating fabrication drawings for pressure vessels, structural steel, piping, and P&ID’s using Inventor and AutoCAD software. This position is accountable for ensuring drawing quality, meeting project timelines, mentoring design staff, and driving continuous improvement within the design process. You will report directly to senior management.
Responsibilities:
Lead the creation of 3D models and extraction of 2D fully dimensioned drawings with weld symbols and all information required for fabrication
Ensure compliance with ASME Y14.5 and Y14.7 standards
Manage design activities from receipt of order through fabrication and shipment
Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring quality and deadlines are met
Conduct and lead in-house and customer design reviews
Mentor and support drafters and designers in technical skills and software use
Drive process improvements to enhance design quality and communication across teams
Approve final drawing packages and ensure technical accuracy
Coordinate closely with project management, engineering, and fabrication departments
Ensure that all deliverables meet customer specifications and applicable codes
Required:
Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role
Proficient in: Inventor, AutoCAD, Autodesk iLogic, and Vault
Skilled in developing complex design sets including structural, mechanical, ASME coded vessels, and piping designs
Experience working with and interpreting customer specifications
Familiar with ASME Section VIII DIV.1, AISC, SID, and OSHA standards
Proven experience supporting fabrication shops with accurate details and bills of materials
Ability to develop conceptual through final design
Strong understanding and application of welding symbols
Capable of using Compress to create ASME code vessel detail drawings
Ability to review customer specifications and produce necessary documentation: engineering reports, operation manuals, compliance documentation, BOMs, weld maps, installation guides, and ECNs
Ability to read and write English and communicate effectively with internal and external teams
Physical Requirements and other items to communicate:
The ability to lift 50 pounds. Work in a high-paced manufacturing environment. Must be able to multitask and manage frequent interruptions while maintaining focus on project goals and work overtime.
